Lilibeth Cuenca Rasmussen’s interests lie in socio-cultural relations; her videos pieces, animations, performances and songs examine issues of identity, gender and culture in connection to different communities in the society. In her examination of socio-cultural constructions and how they are influenced by different individual circumstances, environment and ethnicity, Cuenca Rasmussen often places her self at the centre of her works, acting as object or character. Her works have the ability to “hit a raw nerve” in their astute examination of how “self” is constituted and how people act within a group either chosen or determined by social situations. Key to Cuenca Rasmussen’s work is her articulate use of humour and wit, which that allows her to effectively critique her subject matter and deliver serious and sometimes political messages.
In her installation ‘Life is too Short!’, Lilibeth Cuenca Rasmussen reflects on her childhood in the Philippines. ‘Life is too Short!’ consists of three projections, each showing a portrait of a Filipino woman in her daily surroundings, job, home, and with her family. These are lifestyles that could have been her own, had her family not moved to Denmark. She humorously imagines herself being the women and living their lives by placing herself in their surroundings, with their husbands and families.
Lilibeth Cuenca Rasumussen was born in the Philippines in 1970. She graduated from the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts in 2002. She currently lives and works in Copenhagen.
